Why Should I Plan my Career?

ladder

It has been demonstrated that those who get the furthest in their profession, know where they are going from an early stage in their career. So it is important to have a career plan but it is also necessary to be flexible and willing to modify your plans as situations change and opportunities arise.

Developments in your field will be happening all the time and it is essential to continually update your technical knowledge. Some employers are good at providing training and development opportunities, realising that well trained employees keep industry competitive. Other employers are less forward thinking. Constant changes in the job market mean that you may need to sell yourself to a new employer at any time. Therefore, you need to take ownership of your career and its continuing development.

Studies have also shown that good personal and social skills are important for career success. Spending time improving these skills can be a better use of time than enhancing your technical skills. It is also important to network as a high proportion of jobs are obtained through networking; particularly more senior roles.

Mentoring can help you to plan your career, help you to become self aware and provide networking opportunities.

Be under no elusions, as the mentee, you will need to put in the hard work to turn your plans into actions and finally achievements. Mentors help you to achieve your goals by providing information, support and encouragement. They can help you to clarify your goals, keep you focused while working toward the goal and provide information and advice when asked.
